Insuring All Home Types

Standard home policies cover the home you primarily occupy. So how do you insure a home that you do not occupy on a regular basis or that you rent out full time to others? Follow along as review a few different scenarios for non-primary homes.

Secondary Home

A secondary home is all in the title; a second home you purchase. These homes are owned but only stayed at for short periods of time throughout the year. With most standard carriers, a secondary home is a classification of home type, and a normal home policy can be purchased.

Seasonal Home

Much like a secondary home, a seasonal home is an additional home you purchase, but do not primarily reside in. A seasonal home is one where you may have longer stays, but only at particular times of the year. An example is a cabin you own up north that you visit during the summer months, but not during the winter months. Most standard carriers have it as a selection of home type on a normal home policy as well.

Dwellings Rented to Others

These policies are known as dwelling fire policies, and are purchased when you own a premises, but it is rented out to others. The home will not be owner-occupied, and thus a normal home policy will not cover these scenarios. Vacant homes can also fall under this type of policy as well.
